Charles Hotson Ebden
Charles Hotson Ebden was a pastoralist, entrepreneur and Victoria’s first Auditor-General. He built Black Rock House in 1856 for his wife Tamar Harding. It is believed the holiday house was named Black Rock House after the town in Ireland where Tamar lived. The house was originally on 112 hectares. The castellated walls, it is now known for, were built from rock quarried at Quiet Corner at Black Rock Beach.
